Pathway to Becoming a Club-Certified Helmsman
What is the Pathway to becoming a Qualified Helm for Club Boats?
To become a Club Certified Helmsman, follow these steps:
Step 1: Induction Course
Duration: 8 hours of training
Additional Requirement: 5 mentored sails (2 hours each)
Step 2: Day Sailing Level 1 Course
Duration: 12 hours of training
Additional Requirement: 8 mentored sails (2 hours each), including an eligibility test for Day Sailing Level 2
Step 3: Day Sailing Level 2 Course
Duration: 16 hours of training
Additional Requirement: 4 mentored sails (2 hours each), including an eligibility test for the Helmsman certification
Step 4: Club Helmsman Test
Final assessment for certification

What are the dates and times for the course?
The course dates and times are listed on our Courses Page. We offer four time slots daily (two in the morning and two in the evening) on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, training is available in the morning only, unless stated otherwise. Time slots are selected to ensure optimal sailing conditions and are not flexible.
For how long is this qualification of Club Helmsman Test Valid?
There is no revalidation as of now.
How do I enroll for an Able Boats Club Sail Training Course?
Step 1. Select a Course you would like to join
Step 2. Make payment for the course.
Step 3. Receive a course booking confirmation.
Step 4. Follow the provided instructions to prepare for and attend the course.
What do I do after the completion of the Course?
After completing the course, it’s essential to continue refining your skills. We offer Mentored Sails (MeSail) to help you further develop your sailing abilities.
What is a Mentored Sail (MeSail)?
A Mentored Sail provides guidance from an experienced sailor to help you build the skills needed for proficient sailing. The mentor acts as a teacher, counsellor, advisor, and role model, offering feedback, advice, and support. Their goal is to help you become a more skilled and confident sailor.
What if I miss a Training Course Session?
Training sessions must be completed as per the course schedule. Missed sessions cannot be carried forward, repeated, or refunded.
In case of bad weather
In the rare event of sudden or severe weather changes, session times may be adjusted to ensure safety. Such decisions are made at the instructor’s discretion.
What Equipment will I need to buy for the Training?
We will provide the sailboat and a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). You are responsible for personal items like a penknife, cap, notebook, etc. A list of required items will be shared before the course begins.
How do I know my seat for a Course is confirmed?
Seats are confirmed on a “First PAID, First CONFIRMED” basis. Ensure you pay well in advance to secure your place. Confirmation will be sent once your payment is received.
How do I get a Seat Booking Confirmation?
After payment, you will receive an email from sail@able.boats.
When do Course bookings close ?
Bookings close either 10 days before the course start date or once all seats are filled, whichever comes first.
Select a Course you would like to join between Club or Yachting Association of India Courses => Select a Course start date from the AB Sail Training Calendar => Send in a booking request => course dates allocated tentatively => Make sure you can attend all sessions => Pay your Course Charges => Get a Course Booking Confirmation => Attend the Course.
