Dingy Sailing L1

This course is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to small boat sailing for novices. The course includes an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential knowledge that will allow participants the freedom of sailing small boats with guidance from the Instructor or Coach. It is recommended that this short introduction to sailing be consolidated by the completion of the Basic Skills – Level 2 Course and they are often run together.

SECTION A – PRACTICAL

  1. Rigging – Knowledge of spars and rigging, parts of a sail, sail controls and foils.
    • Correct positioning of the boat relative to wind direction
    • Identify parts of the boat, spars, sails and rigging
  2. Ropework
    • Can tie a Figure of eight
    • Can tie a Round turn and two half hitches
    • Secure a rope to a cleat.
  3. Sailing Techniques and Manoeuvres
    • Has Wind Awareness….where is the wind blowing from?
    • Has a practical understanding of the following manoeuvres
      • Reaching – sailing across the wind.
      • Stopping – lying-to, controlling speed under sail and stopping.
      • Getting out of “irons”.
      • Sailing up-wind, “ beating “ close Hauled.
      • Tacking.
      • Sailing down- wind, “running” before the wind.
      • Gybing.
    • Steering and crewing in light winds under supervision on a triangular course.
    • Primary boat controls and basic heave-to.
  4. Launching and Recovery
    • Can secure a boat on a trolley
    • Understands the principles of :
      • Wheeling a trolley clear of other boats and overhead cables.
      • Launching and leaving the shore.
      • Coming ashore and recovery of the boat
      • Wind awareness ashore.
      • Demonstrate care of boats when launching.

SECTION B – SAILING BACKGROUND

  1. Sailing Theory and Background
    • Has awareness of other water users.
    • Basic knowledge of Rules of the Road and Observation of basic rules including:
    • Collisions Avoidance.
    • Power / sail, port / starboard, overtaking boat, windward boat and head-on approach situations.
    • Exceptions – commercial vessels.
  2. Prepare and Plan
    • Selecting and wearing clothing, personal buoyancy aids and safety equipment suitable to the conditions.
    • Group and individual safe practices demonstrated.
    • What to carry from land before going on the waters.
  3. Meteorology
    • Has awareness of On-shore, Off-shore Wind direction and relative strength.
    • Environmental wind indicators.
    • Sources of weather information.
  4. Capsize recovery
    • Understands basic theory of Capsize Recovery Drill by doing a dry land capsize and knowing the importance of staying with the boat and crew.
    • What to do in a towing situation

Outcomes

You will receive** a YAI Basic Skills – Level 1 certificate and have a basic understanding of sailing a small boat.

Pre-requisites

This is an introductory course, so there are no pre-requisites.

What to do afterwards?

You should have logged 10 hours of assisted sailing. Then continue training in Small Boat Sailing by enrolling for the Basic Skills – Level 2 award.

  1. The above course fees are all inclusive.
  2. These courses are approved by World Sailing, Indian Olympic Association, The Union Minstry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  3. Dates and times for on water sessions may be changed at the discretion of the Instructor.
  4. A Course will be completed within the stipulated dates & Times. Any carry forward of sessions will not be allowed.
  5. Certificate will be awarded basis a candidate demonstrating knowledge, understanding and doing the tasks set as per the YAI log book.
  6. We reserve the right to revise the fees in case of cost escalation of over 15 % of the present input costs.
  7. Practice boats for skill building will be made available on request, at an extra cost.
